CBT & MS

People with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) are well aware of the fact that MS is more complex than just the manifestations of the physical symptoms.

Have you ever heard about Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)?

CBT is a form of psychological therapy. It can help people living with MS identify illogical and unhelpful thoughts and prevent them from recurring and becoming a vicious cycle. CBT techniques help to replace those thoughts with better ones.

CBT could increase mental and emotional well-being and, consequently, can improve physical health. For example, CBT can help manage the symptoms of fatigue. By applying CBT techniques, people learn how to think differently about fatigue and maybe break down activities into more manageable parts. Using CBT, people living with MS may find ways to live a full life despite persisting fatigue or other conditions that negatively affect the quality of life, such as depression and anxiety.

It isn’t for everyone, but for those interested in learning and applying CBT techniques, it can be a tremendous help. It typically consists of a series of sessions with a therapist one-to-one or in a group setting. It can also be delivered by computer or over the phone.
