An intriguing new interesting study points at Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) as a significant trigger for multiple sclerosis (MS).
EBV is a common virus that has been previously implicated in MS development.
However, for the first time, substantial evidence of causality is presented.
A longitudinal study was conducted among over 10 million US soldiers during their active duty.
Results indicated that MS risk increased 32-fold following an EBV infection, but not after other viruses. Additionally, a typical MS biomarker of nerve degeneration increased only after EBV infection.
The researchers suggested that EBV drugs or a vaccine may prevent or even cure MS.
