The main cannabinoids studied for medicinal cannabis products are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which contributes to the ‘high feeling,’ and cannabidiol (CBD), which doesn’t.
How does it work?
THC and CBD act on cells via the cannabinoid receptors on the cell’s surface. The cannabinoid receptors in the spinal cord and brain are different from these found in other body areas, including the immune system.
THC can improve appetite, decrease nausea, and improve muscle control.
CBD (cannabis oil) may help with spasticity and pain. In addition, it may also help to control epileptic seizures, and it might be a promising option for conditions such as PTSD as social anxiety.
Various medical cannabis products such as Sativex contain particular quantities of THC&CBD. Some oils or tinctures are made from the original plant prepared and analyzed to ensure the consistency of each dose.
More data is needed to ascertain the therapeutic potential of THC &CBD and the safety and efficacy of dosages.
