More is NOT Always Better

Do you take prescription medications? How about over-the-counter (OTC) ones? Do you also take vitamins, minerals, or other dietary supplements?

Did you know that combining two (or more) medications can cause unwanted reactions that can affect the drug’s potency and effectiveness? Combining medication with dietary supplements can be problematic as well. Some dietary supplements can affect the medication potency by altering its absorption, metabolism, or excretion.

Things get even more complicated when alcohol gets into the mix. Some problems you might think are MS-related or a medication side effect, such as memory loss, irritation, or coordination problems, could occur from combining alcohol and your medication(s).

When you’re using several medications and/or dietary supplements, you should be proactive. Please consult with your healthcare team and let them know about all supplements and medications you’re currently taking. Don’t forget to mention all the OTC medicines, including antacids, pain relievers, cold medicines, and laxatives. Eye drops and topical medicines, such as ointments and creams – should be part of your list as well.
